Since 2020, consumer technology companies have seen massive growth as new norms for schools and businesses shift between homes, offices and classrooms. According to Statista and the Consumer Technology Association, global consumer technology sales will increase from $422 billion in 2020 to $505 billion in 2022.

Hybrid models are here to stay as new realities emerge. What does this mean for brands? Despite strong demand, how, where and what consumers are buying has changed. Their actions are driving new information about loyalty and new business models.

The home tech stack is powerful these days. Research shows that 84% of households own a laptop and 75% own at least one tablet. Households are also more likely to own laptops and tablets than desktops. The most common laptop brands are HP (40%), Dell (29%) and Apple (21%). From generation to generation, preferences vary slightly. Apple is the most popular among consumers aged 18 to 34 (35%) and HP is the most popular among consumers aged 50 to 64 (47%).

In addition to devices such as laptops and computers, 96 percent of households own at least one mobile phone, and 28 percent own three or more.

With so much tech under one roof, people are spending more time online than ever before. Globally, 92% of respondents said they spend more or the same amount of time online compared to 2020. Ease of use and experience will continue to be front and center for consumers as they are continually updated with the product. This has led to another major shift in consumer preferences: how consumers use their devices and which ones to buy. Being purposeful isn't just a buzzword, it's a lifestyle choice.
